How does preseason work?
 

So I keep hearing this is "preseason" and season 2 has ended. So how does ranking work in preseason? Do ranked games essentially "not count" until season 3 starts and then we play and get an elo rating? Or?

this has kind of already been answered a couple times, but to clearify...

Yes you will earn elo in the preseason, and it will carry over to season 3. Elo has been given a soft reset, and your first 10 (solo queue) matches will be considered placement matches. You will gain and lose much larger amounts until then, and even for a bit afterwords.

the only thing that changed is the soft elo reset. the reason it is called the preseason is that riot is adding some major changes to the game, new items and changing the masteries.

There's also a bit of a break for the competitive scene. While they may have some events during the preseason, I don't believe there will be any of significant size, or at least any that contribute towards getting into the S3 qualifiers.
