Hi, this is Congressman Jared Polis of Colorado. As a member of the League of Legends community (partial to Anivia and Maokai), and as someone who made his living as an Internet entrepreneur before being elected to Congress, I’m greatly concerned about the future of the Internet and gaming if Congress doesn't wake up. You may have heard that Congress is currently considering a bill called the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA. While SOPA has a ton of problems, there are some significant issues that I thought fellow gamers might want to know about.

I’m particularly concerned that SOPA might stifle the kind of innovation that brings us games we love, such as LoL. The bill makes it far too easy for angry competitors to sue good law abiding companies out of existence. It threatens any company or website that depends on user-generated content, even companies like Riot. Instead of coming up with great ways to keep making games like LoL even better, companies will have to spend their money hiring lawyers. That's why companies like Riot, who want to protect the games they create, are opposed to SOPA.

I’ve been working on alternative legislation that would protect the games companies create while also fostering innovation. But we also need you to call your members of Congress and let them know of your opposition to SOPA. This bill has a very real chance of passing, and it is up to all of who want to protect the Internet to take action. More information is available at http://keepthewebopen.com/. Please make your voices heard in this debate! I will be happy to respond to your posts below, and will check back every few hours today and respond to as many as I can.

You are now my favorite person to ever be involved with politics.

I sorry Roosevelt, its not you. It's me.

Peaches 01-11-2012 10:48 AM

can we do anything in other countries like the UK? i mean, it will affect the world if this goes through.

Aw man. I just found the list of Co-Sponsors of the bill (can be found here: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/D?d112:37:./temp/~bd7tb6:@@@P Actually that might be a temporary link ) and my rep is right there on top.

Riot Games, they really do care. <3

BaronVonWalrus 01-11-2012 10:52 AM

The Walrus does not approve of SOPA.

It must be crushed like a bug under the great metaphorical boot of the Internet.

Also, it's the sociopolitical equivalent of using a rocket launcher to kill a spider on the wall. You're creating more problems than you solve.

NeoBluereaper 01-11-2012 10:52 AM

*monocle* Bloody hell even UK is not safe!

WW3 will happen if this goes through!

*Sips Tea*

Barnem 01-11-2012 10:52 AM

Hey Riot and fellow League-ers.

Don't just sign the petition, and email your representative. They get thousands upon thousands of emails a day. And while that is a good indicator for their staff to say something, a lot of impact is made through calling and speaking with representative staff.

http://www.house.gov/

http://www.senate.gov/

Look up your reps. Call them! Talk to them or whoever you can.

Be polite, be mature, and be passionate! Again, be polite and mature! They may be wrong in our eyes, but they are still people and should be treated with respect. And you won't convince someone by calling them an idiot.

*gets on soap box*

Guys, I just would like to take a second to remind fellow Americans about your civic duty. At first glance, it seems that people our age don't matter in politics. We can't be elected until a certain age, and the way the news media describes elections and politic discourse in general ignores people of our age.

It's a crock. At the age of 18, you are eligible to vote. It is your RIGHT as a citizen to vote, given to you the day you were born. It means that even if other people are not talking about you, it does not mean you are not entitled to have your voice heard, and it does not mean your vote should be discounted.

Politicians do *NOT* materialize out of thin air. They're voted into office. You can talk about campaign money and advertising all you want, but still people went and people VOTED for them to get manipulated by whatever political boogeyman (SOCIALISTS or CORPORATIONS, or fill in the blank) you believe in. Your action, or lack thereof, played a part in putting the people who are voting on SOPA there. It's easy to think that your vote doesn't matter, and by that consequence, your voice doesn't.

That's wrong. Even if your candidate didn't win, that doesn't mean you can't talk to the people that were elected. Government participation doesn't start and stop after elections, it's a year-round process. If people don't talk to their elected officials, then of course the folks who line their pockets with cash will always get their way. You've got to participate when you can, however you can. You can change things, but it starts through participation. And that means getting the people around you to participate too. And getting educated! Maybe it's not possible to know about every issue ever (our brains would melt, or we'd sink into depression, who knows), but take the time to learn about issues that affect you. Vary your news sources. Don't just read Fox/MSNBC/CNN, look at independent sources. Read liberal and conservative stuff. Even if you roll your eyes at the folks you don't like, the least you can do is try to understand where they are coming from.

*hops off soap box*

Sorry about that. =\ I do advocacy work so this is kind of my schtick.

EleJames 01-11-2012 10:53 AM

Well done RIOT. I'm Proud to support you guys by being a loyal customer.

KrYoS 01-11-2012 10:53 AM

Thanks for the heads up. Action has been taken and I'm putting out the word to everyone I know. SOPA must be stopped.

HotHit 01-11-2012 10:53 AM

The American government has no right to do this. I don't even know where the BENEFITS are to this act. All I can tell is that many frequently visited websites are going to get hit for this. It's like seeing one person is infected with an illness and NUKING CIVILIZATION as plan A to prevent it.

Stop piracy? MY ARSE this'll stop piracy! This will ENCOURAGE it. Compare this: Illegally pirating a ROM and emulator off of a shady website on the internet against travelling to a foreign country ($200+) to buy a game ($30+) that may not even be in stock there (FFFFF) to have to play it in their foreign localization (-.-"), all because somebody forgot that there was a market for games in your country and any and all methods of shipping it over through Amazon or Ebay were impossible. SOPA is exactly the same thing, legitimate consumers have a harder time enjoying themselves than the pirates. Piracy is also cheaper, take your pick.

To me, SOPA is just the American government thinking they can control the censorship of THE ENTIRE WORLD. I'm British, I shouldn't have to deal with the bullcrap from a government I can't even vote for.

So please, if you're not going to support your own internet usage, PLEASE do it for all the people who are limited by the nationality.

Loli Doc 01-11-2012 10:53 AM

Not being from the US, the only thing I could do is sign online petitions. I doubt they'll tip the scale in any way, but every little bit helps i think.. SOPA is bad, very bad. Even tho the law will be passed in the USA, everyone in the world will get affected. That's not a decision that the USA government should be taking on their own.

Siggy Kewts 01-11-2012 10:53 AM

Posting to show my support of the opposition of SOPA. +1

Low Door 01-11-2012 10:54 AM

I understand this is a serious matter. And I support stopping this terrible act by congress. However, I couldn't help but laugh, when I read:
