I know what you mean OP... I've been level 30 for a while but mindful of making sure that:
a) I know the champions
b) have a few per role
c) Have runes/masteries/pages for options
Took me a while, but then I kind of just got stuck with my finger hovering over the "ranked game" button... Was I good enough? Was I about to lose my team ELO? Should I just "Normal" instead?
I am easing myself into it at the moment and trying to do a couple of ranked games a night. I still don't have my "official" rating yet, but I am 4wins 2losses at the moment which seems good enough for getting started. My strongest positions are solo top or solo mid and haven't needed (yet) to fill in my weaker positions (AD Carry/Jungle) or weakest position (support). I can hold my own in the other positions, but I find Support the hardest to practice as "Normals" are terrible for Support practice (as nobody gets what the support role is for, complains when you buy wards and complains when you don't carry the game... *sigh*).
I did have a bad start top lane in a couple of games (well, I won/held my lanes but we lost overall) with Singed who is one of my favourite champions, but over the weekend I got a couple of wins with him bringing him back to a 50% win rate for me! :)
With Season 2 coming to an end I am keen to get an official rating. I have a feeling I need to do 10 games to do that though. Even so, like you I am hesitant to get into a ranked as the stakes are higher. I have to admit though, the competition is tougher and more enjoyable because of it.
Also, it might just be me, but since the new Honour system came in, there is a serious drop in ragers making ranked games a little less scary!
