It's been quite a while since we last heard about Observer Mode, and when we did, it was supposedly finished. Can anybody give us some sort of update about what's going on with it? I know Riot's been busy with Dominion, so now that that's done, are they going to shift their attention to Observer Mode?

Spectator has been and is still being worked on. It's getting much closer to completion. We never said it was "finished."
Something like Spectator doesn't really have a hype plan the same way that Dominion did. Certainly, Spectator is a big deal, but this isn't something we'd tease over the course of a month and release developer diaries on every three days. All I can really say is we're getting much closer. I know that's not very concrete, but it's the best I can give you guys right now. |

While a good portion of the tech was working, there was no UI, localization, or "minimum viable product" features. Literally it was the Spectator feature team going up to me and saying, "Okay what hotkeys do you want? Okay we're going to hard-code those for now." Then it's also only spectating one match at a time as opposed to tens of thousands as is easily possible on the live environment.
For those who keep bringing up "ghosting" via Spectator: That's been thought of since day 1 of its development. Nothing is technically impossible, but we're baking in spectator delay with the feature, so I wouldn't be afraid of tournament sanctity if I were you. |

Spectator mode represents a significant amount of groundwork for delivering replays. Spectating is essentially watching a replay for a game still in progress.

One of our goals for spectator mode was to make sure it would not affect the game servers. Spectators actually connect to a separate set of servers, not the game servers. This is one of the reasons it's taken a while to build. We're constructing a completely new service, not just a feature.
