I would recommend two things: First, make sure you thoroughly investigate the champion YOU decide to buy. Once you purchase it, there are no refunds. Secondly, I recommend that you change your name. If you are a player who is in need of help on our forums, having a name with the word "troll" in it may not get you the attention you are looking for.

In any case, if you still need help, feel free to call upon the ambassadors!

If you are clueless, which is how you sound, then I recommend you save your IP and stick to trying out freebie heroes until you find one you really like. This game can easily waste many hours of work if you foolishly jump the gun and buy runes or heroes you soon find you don't really want. If you are going to get a hero without ever having used him before, put a lot of thought into it. This is where mobafire is useful, because the in game client does not list whether abilities scale with AD or AP, but the website does. You could also read some guides.

You can purchase a name change in the store in your LoL client. If you have any more questions in the future, feel free to call upon the Ambassadors!

If this is your first 3150 IP, I honestly wouldn't spend it on a single hero. IP cost does not correlate with how good the hero is by any measure and having access to a number of strong heroes in multiple roles whenever you want them is the best way for you to improve at the game. For example, you could pick up Annie/Ryze (450, AP carry), Ashe/Sivir (450, AD carry), Soraka (450, support), and Cho'Gath (1350, Top/jungle/whatever he wants to do) and still have IP left over.

gotta agree about the name chance. There is a problem with trolls in game that some people are very negative about..like me :-)
Plus if you show up in tribunal (almost unaviodable) and I saw your name I would be less likely to believe you were having an off game or computer issues. If you are a decent enough player to not die much and a nice enough person not to say anything that could be considered offensive you could be fine.
The flip side is if you get unlucky enough to get a could games with trolls who report everyone because they know you are reporting them your name could get you banned...
As far as who to buy I'd say save it up and test out the weekly free champs. That's pretty much how I've found all the ones I like. Except gangplank, bought him to try out something funny
Good luck with what ever you decide :-)

If you're not that far along (below level 15 or so) I would recommend making another account instead of buying a name change.

Or you can be an exemplary model of the Summoner's Code and keep a positive attitude.

And your name would be fitting if you played Trundle... the troll. Ohoho. He's 4800 IP and melee, so that doesn't sound like what you're looking for though.

If you're pretty flexible, why not try out the free week champions?
Other than that you could always blind buy. Waste of IP and possible buyer's regret, especially since AP carries are everywhere... and you might not go AP carry unless you love that champion.

It's really up to you. I have randomly bought all of the champions I currently play (junglers and Karma), and the ones I don't play matchmade games with, I still use for in-house customs.
