True damage is unaffected by "% damage increase" such as the masteries Havoc and Executioner. It also does not benefit from bringing things into negative MR, while magic damage does.

Thus, sometimes magic damage will actually deal more damage to a source than true damage will, which is why you're seeing the way out occasionally deal more damage than on the way back.
I just wanted to clarify, does this mean Ignite doesnt increase on damage by effects such as Poppy's ultimate, and Swain's E, and Vlad's ult? I was always under the impression that it did.

As far as I know only smite is unaffected by damage amplifiers be they abilities or masteries.

Poppy's ultimate and Swain's E do increase ignite damage. Vlad's R might, but I doubt it.

Poppys ultimate and Vlads ultimate is an exception to the rules.

Edit: And I'm really only sure that Poppys ultimate is.

I know for a fact that Swain's does. Phreak made that comment in his champ spotlight.

Shaco's smite used to do more damage if he was behind minions. Made baron and dragon steals ridiculously easy.

@Terry Atken
Poppy ultimate does amplify Ignite to my knowledge.

Kayles Q increases Smite damage from Kayle, too. It's fun
