As an openly gay guy, it's very difficult for me to ignore the constant stream of "that's gay" or "you f-ggot" etc that is constantly spewed in the game. And the worst part is that it even happens with people who I know and who know me and that I am out, and it's so ingrained in our culture that they just say it by accident. I don't have a fragile ego, and someone saying "that's gay" specifically isn't going to make me upset or ruin my day. I am just sad and disappointed that something as fun and engaging as our team-based game experience is frequently ruined by the complete and total lack of respect some people have for their fellow players.

Misogyny, homophobia, racism, and any other kind of discrimination are NOT TOLERATED. Please use your report buttons when this occurs. We do listen, and we do review these cases all the time. I always laugh a little when I see tribunal reports of someone who is being a jerk saying "GO AHEAD REPORT ME NOTHING WILL HAPPEN" because then I get to press PUNISH! MWA HA HA!!!! >:-D

And like Lyte, davin, and Iron Stylus said, we are always working on ways to make the community less toxic. Lyte & davin sit directly behind me, so they could tell you quite a few stories of me ranting about player behavior in our game (especially since homophobia is something that directly affects me). I truly, truly love this community to tears. This is the best community I've ever been a part of, and the sheer amount of support and acceptance gushed at me is staggering and humbling. It's a terrible shame than an extremely vocal minority of players can have such a large, toxic, negative impact, and I can assure you that player behavior is being scrutinized closely and very intelligent people like the devs who have posted in this thread are exploring a huge range of solutions.

We want League of Legends to be the best gaming experience possible! Be strong, and stand up to those who are being jerks. Slowly but surely we will make this community change over time, and Riot stands firm behind you to support this change.

There's a difference between saying those words with people you know and saying them with people you don't know. You are basically victimizing the transgressor with your statements. I can make sexist/racist/homphobic jokes with my close friends who know me well because we have an established relationship. I can't do the same thing with random strangers because they have no baseline to compare my behavior to, and they can't know if I am genuine or joking with my discrimination.
