First off, Kayle is an exceptionally strong top laner.

She works particularly well against characters with no gap closer. Since Kayle has a slow, a movement speed enhance, and a temporary ranged attack, melee characters who can't efficiently close the gap to Kayle get extremely sad in lane. Kayle players want to poke at you and discourage retaliation. When you try to close in on her she will Q you, once you run away she will activate her ranged attack and slap you around.

Naturally characters like Jax who have a gap closer and high amounts of burst damage are good against Kayle, also things that have sustain in lane like Nidalee can match up well.

But that isn't most top laners, so what can one do when stuck against Kayle 1v1 top lane?

- Try to avoid her when E is active. E lasts 10 seconds, and is on a 16 second cooldown. If you are melee and want to fight, try and wait until the E fades to go in for your attack (that way she doesn't hit you from 525 range while you try to engage her)

- Try to get into the brushes in lane. If you force Kayle to start the fight at melee range, you usually have an advantage. Her biggest advantages come from poke, range, and heal.

- Keep in mind that Kayle has high mana costs. She can't pull off the poke game forever. If you bring a couple of extra health potions into lane you may be able to withstand the barrage of poke.

- Kayle pushes the wave very quickly when using her E ranged attack. If you can coordinate, have your jungler pay extra special attention to top lane since Kayle is probably always pushed up past the halfway point in the lane.

How so? Kayle's strength is being able to overpower and zone melee tops through her slow and ranged harass, making it hard for her lane opponents to even CS properly and making harass almost impossible ( because between Q, W, and E it's extremely hard to disengage against Kayle after poking her)

Kennen basically negates all of that because he outranges her to begin with and a really strong disengaging tool with E. He can just poke her out with W if she tries to get close, and QWE is free harass she can't respond to if she attempts to commit to move in on him.

I disagree with your statement about nidalee being able to match up against kayle well. Kayle outtrades her at lvl 1, which is when nidalee has the chance to really shine in lane, and her sustain doesn't make up for kayle's ability to zone her from minions.

Yea I have to agree with you. Her mana cost isn't that high on E.

The mana costs, I forgot, but mostly because people are insistent that mana doesn't matter... that Clarity is a terrible skill and mana potions are trash.

However, being able to outlast Kayle's mana is really more a question of kit... if she's using ALL her skills, she'll run dry, but a Kayle relying on say, mainly just her E, with proper manafix, will be much harder to uproot.

A better sustain game can beat that, you can outlast her.
Or a better harass game, but only 2-3 champs can out harass a Kayle.

Or a better commit game. Like say Jax.

So from all this we can agree that Jax, Yorick, and Nidalee can counter Kayle? Am I right?

I should rephrase. While her individual mana costs aren't that high, she consumes a large amount of mana anytime she trades/pokes at you. If you are actively trying to dodge E, then Kayle has to burn a Q on you when you move in for a fight. Also her W is 1 mana per 1 health healed at rank one.

The mana cost point should probably read "Aggressive Kayle harass (Q,E, Heal after) will run Kayle out of mana" rather than "Kayle mana costs are low"

thanks

I still want to hear why you think Kennen loses to Kayle.
