Do skins hold any significance?

Or are they more for just fun and whatnot?

Like was Katarina ever a pirate crew member? Given her skillset it wouldn't seem unlikely.

Well...if you think about how Mundo has a corporate skin and Cho'Gath has a Gentleman skin in their world, it seems more like something that Riot put in there for giggles. That or...the summoners are playing dress up with their champions...

Mundo could be the head of a chemical corporation in Zaun.

You made me blush. That, or the alcohol has kicked in and given me rosy cheeks.

Having said that, skins are designed in three manners: pop culture awesomeness, interesting style variants, or lore-specific inspirations. These categories are not exclusive to one another. The universal goal is certainly for them to be fun, though some hold more weight than others when it comes to the lore.
