Well, if you do not release a fully botlane compatible support well above Karma tier this year, I will absolutely consider it a purposefully broken promise. I mean, 2 supports a year is not very much given that it's a role that is picked by two players in almost every match (with the exception of low level games). And since Karma sucks (and btw, she sucks longer than Eve did. Let that sink in) and Lulu is kinda underpowered, the only support you are likely to see in botlane, and that you could not have played when Sona was released over two years ago, is Leona.
You had enough time to design another support. If you don't make it to release one this year, it's because you did not try hard enough or not early enough. I know that designing supports is hard and things can happen, but I also remember a post in August that "there is still enough time to make one". That sounded very much like many students do their term papers, and the results are not unlikely to be the same

We are not there yet, so no reason for me to hate. For now

If it does, in fact, push support out of the game, we'll fix it and be quick about it - I can say that much. It's not our goal. But at this time, there's no reason to believe Soraka and Janna are weak (though if we stop seeing traditional support or heavy favor of kill support, we'll go back towards where we are/were).

I agree that Sona is quite strong and might need some nurfings. I also think that some of your difficulty with the support balance stems from the gold starvation meta. Consider this: At level one, nobody has any particular power from items. So very minuscule differences in base stats and the first skills can have a huge impact. Also, the power increase granted by the first few level ups is very large compared to, say, from level 17 to level 18. After the first few levels, differences in itemization begin to take over. If both you and you top lane partner both have a glacial shroud, nobody cares about a difference of 5 in starting armor. In bot lane, the situation is different. It is a duo lane, so players level up slower, and one of each team effectively gets no items at all. Hence, the differences in base stats/low level skills and minuscule level differences carry much farther.
If supports are now allowed to actually have (some) gold and to increase the individual power level via items, this might level the playing field some. It will also reduce some of the problems with scaling. How often has it happened that a support would actually be played at another lane and found out to be extremely strong due to the (gold-starvation-induced) high base stats, now suddenly coupled with real scaling items? The answer was always a direct nerf to AP ratios (just look up the old ratios for Sona or Soraka for funzies), a hit to base stats, or both (cf. Lulu). If supports now are actually supposed to have some scaling from items, that effect should be far less important. At least it's my hope, and I am
really excited for the support gold change.
Also, the general perceived power level of supports might go up, so you can actually wield the nerfbat without a general outcry if there is a problem. So no pressure. Not at all.
Cheers!
