the Core build I had in mind was FH, Lichbane and some other AP item (RoA? Grail?)

Not one of those items is terribly hard to get, but all of them together take some time. But as AP mid you have Wraith Camps which are really easy money. You can potentially make a kill's worth of gold every 45 seconds on average.

AP Nasus pretty much banks on stacking up Q. That's where the "zomg 1500 damage from where" comes from.

He exceeds 500 AP, meaning his Q will proc over 600 damage by end game with 0 farm on it, it is on about 2 seconds of cooldown, his Spirit Fire will be dealing 1000+ damageif they are caught in the full duration. You have some decent resistances and your kiting ability is pretty strong thanks to wither. Your ult will also deal 10% of their health per second before resistance checks, so you still can go somewhat tanky.

Still is 3000+ for the full duration which is a kill on absolutely anyone.

Pretty much this. Every minute, you should get over a kill's worth in cs assuming you don't get zoned/ganked.

By 11 minutes, with no kills, deaths or assists, you should have enough for your first big item if you take your wraith camps too.
