What is the role of an AP Carry in a teamfight?

Like, what should they be going for; from my understanding:

AD Carry generally shoots whatever is in front of them, preferably opposing AD Carry when in range

Bruiser/Tank/Assassin initiates/follows up on initiate and gives the enemy team hell/goes after high profile targets
or they peel

Supports peel enemies off the AD Carry/initiates/does something to turn the tide around

Do AP Carries follow the same objective of bruisers/assassins and initiate or go for the high profile targets, or follow suit with AD Carry and nuke whatever is in range? Or something else?

Any kind of info would be appreciated <3

EDIT: I'm asking a legit question here, feel free to flame me for it being simple but why downvote me :c

Bang Bang Boom Boom. Do tons of damage!

Usually your job is to take care of squishies like the opposing AP or AD. Or depending on the champ, stunning high profile targets or even zoning the enemy team.

Do the most damage you can. Use utility spells for utility.

In fact often the best strategy is the same as with ADs, hit whatever is closest anyways, because staying alive is still the most important thing. However, as APs are cooldown dependent, there are situations where you can sacrifice safety for a significant boost in damage because once an AP's cooldowns are down they are expendable for a period of time. If you know you can get several combos off in a fight, then don't go rambo and die after the first combo and only getting damage off once. For example, Vlad, you want to drag the fight out as long as humanly possible because you want the damage to stack up more and more while you heal more and more. However, if you know the chances of you getting only one combo off is really high or you only need one combo to be meaningful in a fight, then be a bit more aggressive and just wait for a chance to get that combo off for maximal effect. For example if you're Brand, once your spells are on cooldown you are completely expendable for a good 8 seconds, as well as basically useless. So instead of trying to stay alive as long as possible, look for a good opportunity to get the greatest combo off. However, this does not mean going rambo and dying unnecessarily. For example Katarina, you have to wait for the perfect moment to fight so you can do the most damage without dying.

Blow up their AD or AP carry, then skim along the edges of the team fight waiting for your cooldowns to come back up so you can do it again

Overly simplified? That's because each champ is played differently, and your topic is so vauge.

Do you have a sustained damage AP like cass? Just spam spells and hit everyone.

Do you have a nuke champ like veigar? Take out their AP caster and then run for your life.

It varies based on who you are, and who you are playing against.

It varies based on who you are, and who you are playing against.
I figure high mobility AP champs and assassins were covered in the 'target ad carry/high profile target, gtfo'

I guess I was going for more of the nuke and burst kinds of champs, so sustained damage on par with ranged AD and nukes for high profile targets, got it, tanks

Champs like Lux and Anivia should be aiming to strike a balance between damage and utility. If you aren't sure you can burst their AD in range, you instead CC 2 of them running at you or your carry. If you can end a fight before it begins with a 100 - 0 on an important target, you aim to do that and hope your team can clean up. I know for a fact that if I went for the most possible damage on Lux all the time, I would be Q-E-Ring into two bruisers and Taric... when the better idea at the time was probably me instagibbing Graves.

I treat burst casters like guided missiles when it comes to damage rather than trying to do the most possible damage. No point in getting aced with four of them at 20% health when you could ace them and have 1-2 left alive thanks to shutting down most of their damage, or maybe even not fight to begin with.

Other champs like Ryze generally just run in and spank everyone.
