The Problem with anakin's transition was that even before he found his mother's corpse, he showed almost no good traits, he was never quite disciplined, his powers were never that good and we have zero indictcation that he was fit to ever be a master jedi or a sith emperor.
what lucas's shoddy writing did was degrade vader to a emotionless wretch who was not even fit to be a sith crown guard.
