Define real sport.

There are many REAL competitions wherein surrender is acceptable. The more intellectual a competition is the more commonplace it is. Go and Chess are two prime examples.

Yeah, like when USA played Nigeria in basketball. Nigeria never gave up.

You don't concede in any major sport for any reason. You play until the final out, until the clock hits zero, until the final point. If you ever gave up playing a game before the game was over your coach/owner/fans would ream your ass into next week.

There have been forfeits in Major League Baseball and one (a long time ago) in the NFL (then APFA)

Consider team morale. It may have been a likely factor that they didn't want to lose even greater morale then they already had by dragging out the match when they still had upcomming matches.
