It works sporadically at the moment. Like you'll have rank 1 W and it'll change his AD but rank 2 will do nothing. Then you play another game and it works fine.

I wonder why people don't build Abyssal scepter on him.
I think your sarcasm detector is malfunctioning.

I'd much rather pair up Trinity Force with IE than with Maw. IE will give him more raw damage as well as greatly boost his basic attack damage, which ends up being very significant to his overall damage output.

But he rarely uses basic attacks in his combo!

I typically build as much damage and armor pen as I can on him. I've tried cutlass to stack a little more damage onto his ult combo, but it's not worth the extra 150, especially since it doesn't have a great build path.

My normal build is pretty glass canon: Boots 1 -> Doran's -> Brutalizer -> Ionian Boots - >BFSword/Bloodthirster->Last Whisper. I haven't seen a lot of mages on PBE so I don't often work Maw into the build but whenever I see danger from a caster I go for that.

On TT I of course grab Van Damm's.

I rarely auto with him so I don't see an advantage to getting any crit items - He's an AD caster who has a good single auto attack, but doesn't have a lot of good AA damage after the passive goes off.

This, essentially.

I usually go for hexdrinker if I'm laning mid against another AP caster anyways, but maw doesn't have to be a core item.

Actually, right now since it is still season 2 and is before all those juicy new changes, he is better off built as a bruiser with a Brutalizer. He has enough poke and sustained damage to justify it, but building like Ionian/Mercs Brut->Yomuu's FroMa Maw BT and then fill in 6th item here, he is tanky enough to jump in, cripple the carry and live.

You do realize that his E doesn't effect AA animations.
Hence crit and AS will create the highest burst potential on his ult.

Of course with this in mind, try a R>E>W>Q max order.
