I had a similar error. I closed the LOL client and checked my processes in task manager. The PVP.net patch kernel was an active process. I ended the process and the game started right up.

I get this... i dont even get to the screen where u can press play.. just never loads

1.Open Windows Task Manager
2.go to processes
3. find "LolLauncher.exe" (PVP.net Patch),
4. end process
5. start playing
