Or somebody with a giant shield as described, but who faces towards your cursor, even while walking (With slightly different animations for when he's walking sideways or backwards, of course).
That way, you could implement skill-based blocking, where you would have to make sure you were tuned in the correct direction when an attack comes, but can run in another direction between blocks.
