One of the things I have found is that there is a decision point around when to contest or defend a capture. If by defending or pushing a defended point, you can pin down a greater number of enemy champions (1v2 or 2v3) - then you do it. Because while they are wasting time out numbering you on a stalemate, you send your speed team to capture an undefended point (or 2).
Likewise, if you need to send 3 champions to stop a 3 man push, why bother. Send 1 just to slow them down and capture an undefended point instead.
