In terms of items, I've found Rylai, Gunblade and Nashor's Tooth to be all great. You can start with the ability components of the last two and upgrade them when you merge into hybrid late game.

AP Yi is...entertaining.
You'll have a very nice heal and a powerful Alpha Strike, which can be nice, but a lot of Yi's go for attack speed/damage/crit chance, because of the ultimate.
