Howdy! What this guy said is spot on, i main Amumu after i was playing Shen, he is far easier and has enough CC and damage to not need a taunt. A team that ignores the sobbing mummy is the team that dies together.
Note - I am only level 18 :P
The best weapon in your arsenal is the skin.... Emumu
- In all my games last night it has caused lots of LOLs during the laning phase :P
Not too sure if you have tried him yet or not, but:
Bandage toss - Skillshot, takes some getting used too. Use it to initiate or/and chase down a champion
Despair (Starting skill for a jungler)- Attacks anything around Amumu, use this on large creep waves & team fights, but it constantly drains mana
Tantrum (my starting skill for laning) - last hit creeps with this, its also good to harass the enemy, just get in range and pop it. Plus its passive on reduced damage is also a plus and makes you harder to harass.
Curse of the Sad Mummy (Ultimate) - AoE Damage + snare - used in team fights, excellent for either opening or closing.
Laning - Personally i prefer to lane with a ranged, normally (im just playing normal games) most carries wind up harassing me which is almost pointless, i have reduced damage (masteries + tantrum), and I'm a little extra tanky as I've taken some flat health runes + 1 flat health quint. So i start with about 700ish HP at the start.
Now due to him being mana intensive i usually grab the 450g mana regen item (with the aura) - this turns into soul shroud (520 HP + Mana Regen + Cooldown reduction), and then build my items depending on the team im facing.
After laning phase ends and ganks start, coordinate with your team mates, and just initiate and tank as much as possible, also grabbing a Frozen Mallet for the slow effect is always handy (HP, +AD (not so great on mumu) and a slowing effect)
The way i personally initiate -
Disp, Bandage toss someone in the 'middle' of their pack
Hit Curse to keep them all near me while the carries/ranged goto town on them
Tantrum to get in a few hits for assists
