He does requite some exceptional last hitting skills if you're going full support/tank. Since his ult gives him such amazing tanking potential, try some hybrid builds out, like the aforementioned Madred's or Tiamat. I remember one hilarious game where I went mainly attack speed and a frozen mallet and just punched punched punched my way to victory, using my ult as my tanking mechanism.

Try getting Sheen. You mow through creep waves while spamming your heal. It's awesome.

Not only that is Sheen stacks with his passive for wicked turret damage.

I focus on last hitting as much as I can. Alistar has some decent damage early on so last hitting ain't hard. Hell, even in team fights I'll last hit just to make the extra cash.
Tried tiamat but it doesn't really work well, I guess I'll give madred's a go, but even a mere thousand gold is a lot for alistar.
