Can anyone give a solid argument for a GarenXKat?

On motivations:
On the surface, both Garen and Katarina seem like exact opposites.
Katarina is a passionate assassin while Garen is a strict-minded soldier who (likely) lives by a very strict code of honor.
However, putting the two of them together would help reduce the extreme personality traits that both have.

Garen's mind would be expanded by Kat's mindset. He could very likely be attracted to her simply because she is strong-willed and would always keep him on his toes (I could see Kat 'kidnapping' him for a weekend vacation that Garen would normally spend months planning). Katarina is impulsive and would be a breath of fresh air to a soldier who has maintained an extremely strict lifestyle for his entire life.

Katarina would likely find Garen's stability attractive. She is impulsive and lives an extremely chaotic lifestyle. The confident and stoic personality of Garen would be her rock in the world, a safe place where she can always go when feeling overwhelmed. Whereas in Noxus any sign of weakness is immediately pounced upon, the honor and understanding of the Demacian would be unlike something Katarina ever knew (and something she didn't even know that she was missing).

I can see a conversation ending with Katarina asking him what he would do with his own strength to change the world rather than simply lending that strength to his superiors without question. He wouldn't have an answer he was willing to voice.

I believe the lore hints that Garen is a little more concerned with doing the right thing than upholding Demacian pride and glory. I don't think a personality like Katarina's would like a typical honor-bound Demacian hound. It would be his strong convictions of trying to do the right thing within the constrains of his superiors' orders.

And if you consider him protecting Katarina, why did he do that? A lot of Demacians would probably call the guards to halt and shrug if a Noxian were injured or had to jump to defend themselves from an initial blow - it would be beneath them to jump in and act like Garen did, especially on behalf of some Noxian. The guards should be unquestioningly loyal, so a word should suffice. Garen went beyond a word of halt, because he felt it was right to do everything in his power to protect a guest innocent of any wrongdoing (at the time).

I think any relationship potential would be built less around their opposite qualities compensating for each other and more around their similarities. In the new lore, Katarina takes responsibility for her mistake and risks her life to correct it. It possibly means that she has her own strong convictions about doing the right thing. Killing the general was the kind of prideful thing a Noxian would do to show off their strength. Righting the wrong of that decision is the kind of honest, responsible measure that Katarina would do.

Garen is a protector by nature, and Katarina lives in a society where you get your throat cut for seeming weak enough to need protection.

Living a life of never letting your guard down for a second and always needing to watch your back could make Garen's "Fear not, I'm coming!" attitude of selfless protection of others very appealing.

As for why Garen would be attracted to Kat...that's less easy to see. If it's strength and skill, what makes Katarina unique? Why doesn't Garen have a thing for Leona, who's much more in line with Garen's attitude and morals? I'd say it goes to Garen's nature again. He 'brings justice', he fixes things. In his eyes, Katarina is the product of the corrupt Noxian way of life, and he thinks he can "fix" her by showing her that she's wrong (like jumping in to defend her when she's found in Demacia, something that would never happen in Noxus if their positions were reversed.

If that's the case though, why on earth isn't Garen smitten with Riven instead of Kat? She's everything Kat is, except that she's already seen that Noxian might and the rule of strong over weak isn't all there is to the world. Garen/Riven would make a lot more sense, I think, but Garen/Kat is certainly plausible.

You all actually have a few good points. I understand them, but they don't 'feel' right if you know what I mean.

I honestly expected to be a little singed from the flaming, but most of you have been logical and ...not an ass for lack of better wording. Thank you.

One topic has been brought up a couple times, and I wanted to hit that one.

Garen saving Katarina.

Why? He did accost Jarvan at the gate. One would imagine that he knew who was being brought in. A man and a woman...I think we all know who they are by now. So if Garen knew who they were and the chains were a cover, then I imagine he was under orders not to attack them. If his troops weren't in on it, they naturally attack the assassins, and Garen is forced to intervene. II would imagine that as very plausible.

If you're linking to TVTropes, look up Love At First Punch (too lazy to make links). Garen likes Katarina because she was able to equal him in combat. Also because she's sexy, but the violence is definitely a factor.

Basically Garen is a paladin and Kat is the 'bad girl'. It could work if we get some current events of them actually doing things together. They seem to have a clear respect for one another due to their battle prowess, but it needs more than that. Still, they both have their definite strong points for the other to admire so it isn't completely absurd to see something happening in the future.

Just as long as Kat doesn't become some demure housewife that is. That would not be cool Riot.

Judging from the first two articles, it appears that Garen did not have any prior knowledge that Katarina was one of the "prisoners." Jarvan IV intentionally kept him out of the loop (and I don't think Garen has free access to the castle since he stopped at the gates).

I want to quote that entire section you pointed out.

What was this "much to discuss"? Was it related to Katarina and Talon?
And could he not ask who the Prisoners were to confirm that Jarvan had gone ahead with his plan? Jarvan wouldn't say the truth in front of a bunch of people. Thus he brushed him off.
Also, as Childhood friends, would Jarvan REALLY leave Garen out of the loop?
Garen saved his life and was always there to support him. You don't ignore that when you have something this huge going on. You let him in on it.

I am not saying any of this is certain, just what could be and what is likely.

Kat is actually not that noxian of a noxian..she believes in earning power but not that might always makes right

Garen knows kat would rather face him face to face then hide in the bushes like say...talon

I have to disagree with an earlier poster's use of 'chaotic'
demacia is lawful good. every1 is a paladin.
noxus is lawful evil: there is a chain of command and soemthing like honor, but power is sometimes obtained through illegitimate means.
the void is chaotic evil: they just want eat us all.
