The Arcane energy animated Maokai but said nothing about his ability to reproduce or how that creature feels about life, nor does it explain why he sacrifices his own kids.

Odds are he creates them through similar magic to what created him.

His judgement has an interesting twist on the saplings as he the boy's blood from the vision remained, and he tossed some of his roots into the blood giving birth to the first sapling. The sapling has a childlike look towards Maokai, and Maokai states something about another chance at a life.

So is the sapling the boy? Is the sapling just the life of the blood infused with Maokai's own life? Creating some mixture? Does he give birth to the same sapling possibly using it's remains after it's slain (blows up) to bring it back? Or does he just find blood out on the field and offer the blood another chance of life?


I look into this stuff toooooooooo deep. xD

The saplings may be little more than constructs, with no actual sentience.

Also, when they explode, they may not be dying. After all, Maokai's Twisted Advance basically explodes him into bits of bark, which then reform.
