Supports who have no use for Kage's really feel the loss of Heart of Gold.

Every support has gained 60% of a HoG passively from the ambient gold changes alone. Additionally Sightstone completely replaces HoG in a build and provides TWICE the effective GP10

And finally... Pickpocket. Assuming you can get an attack roughly every 6 seconds it is worth (for ranged) 5GP10, for melee it is worth roughly 9GP10

Leona is relatively effective at using Pickpocket compared to other melee supports. She requires aggressive play and consistently attempts to engage the enemy. As long as she gets one attack on an enemy in every ten seconds she's getting a HoG out of pickpocket (hint , you have an AA reset stun combo)

Yes certain supports cannot use kage effectively. However those supports are aggressive tanky supports with personal steroids which already amplify their value of gold more greatly than the steroids of other supports. That's also why Kage is only 4GP10 (and why pickpocket is worth 2GP10 more for melee than ranged)

Sightstone provides the general survivability, and the decrease in gold being spent on wards essentially replaced HoG on its own. HP, and saving tons of money on gold (only takes 6 wards for it to pay for itself and then some), so 9 minutes or so after purchase you're already seeing returns on your investment. Try going philo > sightstone > Kage, and check out the Shard of True Ice and Twin Shadows. Both are great items. Twin Shadows gives you some scouting, and catching ability, while Shard helps your ADC kite bruisers, or provides you with an AoE slow when you engage.

I would like to add to this concerning Leona, as she definitely is talked a lot about on these forums these days. Stacking HP on her is really effective because eclipse shield already gives you good armor and MR. That means your EHP is higher for 6 seconds, which is about the time of an exchange botlane

Wait since when don't Leona and Alistar scale with AP? Remember, you have more gold to spend on you now, so you might even consider the Morellonomicon.
