There are a few champions with abilities that deal magic damage but scale off of AD. It doesn't seem like there are any items that capitalize on this, though. Katarina, for example, is supposed to have the option of being a hybrid champion but in practice there are no items that help her accomplish this as a caster. All AD items that would be good on a caster grant things like lifesteal, armor penetration, critical chance, or attack speed that a magic damage caster can't make much use of.

One might argue that they could start auto attacking to make use of these new stats, but in practice a champion like Katarina doesn't last long auto attacking even with plenty of AD, because she's a melee champion without any CC.

Am I simply not seeing these items, or are magic damage AD champs too much of a niche class to justify their existence? Should they just be expected to make due with the AD items available?

Hextech Gunblade provides AD, AP, Life Steal, Spell Vamp, and a nuke/slow active.

Guinsoo's Rageblade provides AD, AP, and a stacking AP/AS buff on spell casts and auto attacks.

Trinity Force provides AD, AP, and provides tons of damage.

Items with both stats do exist for those champions that scale with both, but they are few and far between. Throughout season 2, Rageblade was mostly considered a joke item. Trinity Force is more of a bruiser item. But the Gunblade has been a strong item for Katarina, Akali, and Jax for a long time, and will likely remain so.

The biggest problem with items like these, I suspect, is that they are a nightmare to balance. If you have a champion that scales well with AD but the abilities do magic damage, it's difficult to build against them as they'll be doing a large amount of hybrid damage. That's likely why you don't see very many.

As far as I'm aware Katarina is pretty much the only hero that does that, and she has a pretty solid selection of items. There are heros that get more magic damage from AP, heroes that get more physical damage from AD, a hand full of heroes that get more physical damage from AP, but there are hardly any heroes that get magic damage from AD.

Nidalee, Kayle, and Katarina are the only ones that come to mind. In the end such an item just seems to niche to be worthwhile.

@Thrillseekers: That's a valid point, but champs like this tend not to scale with all of their abilities. A Katarina who builds AD has auto attacks as a sort of option, and Sinister Steel and Death Lotus would be more powerful, but she loses scaling damage on Bouncing Blade and Shunpo to compensate. That seems fair to me. If she built AP and AD, she's not going to get nearly as much bang out of a Deathcap. She would be dealing moderate amounts of both damage types instead of high amounts of each, which I think is the point of a hybrid build.

@67chrome: Shyvana also has a magic damage attack that scales on AD. I agree that the items wouldn't see a ton of use, but items like Nashor's Tooth are fairly niche items as well, granting AP and attack speed, yet they still exist for champions like Teemo.
