As a software engineer, the first thing that jumps out about Vi is her name. Vi(m) is a famous text editor used by a huge number of IT folk, and if I had to guess, Vi is a tribute to Vi the editor, which is awesome. (see vim.org)

Vim (the most commonly used version of Vi) is charity-ware, the author asks programmers who use vim to donate to their orphanage at: http://www.iccf.nl/news.html

Given I can guarantee that vim has been used at Riot to bring us this amazing game, it would be immensely impressive of Riot if they donated a small % of Vi sales to the official Vi charity , and made a bunch of orphans better off in the process.

Not so sure that was what they were going for there with the name. As she does state Vi stands for "Violence"! Any who, nice angle though since I work in IT as well and I am quite familiar with Linux and Vim.
