For exp: range for exp is a tad larger than sight range. So long as you are within that radius you should be fine. Also, masteries in the utility tree tend to help. Get the experience masteries.

For the gold, don't worry too much. Get assists when possible. Gold quints are amazing. So are the gold masteries. gp10 got nerfed heavily, but it works in your favor because passive gold increased. Still pick up at least one gp10 (usually philo stone).

Wards keep your lane safe. Always have wards handy. I cannot stress this enough. The fact that you and your AD carry are protected from jungle ganks more than makes up for the cost in gold, as you will be getting assist gold from your carry and in order for him/her to get the kills, you have to protect them and get them set up.

I don't want to speak for the rager who flamed you for hitting but not killing creeps, but one reason that's a bad idea is that you push the lane towards the enemy tower due to uneven distribution of damage to the creeps and this opens up ganking opportunities on you for the enemy jungler/makes it harder to chase and kill your lane opponents due to them being close enough to retreat to the safety of their own tower.

@OlBloodNGutz: I was thinking about this a bit yesterday; it could be either what you just said or even that he wants the right amount of damage on each minnion so he can plan his use of skills?

@OlBloodNGutz: Did you used to play DoW II by any chance? I'm guessing you're the same guy that set up the L2Play steam group since you're posting in this section?

@Kjel: There are a number of reasons your ADC might have been getting upset and even though some have been brought up already, I'll just go over them all along with a couple of random support tips.

-You doing damage to minions can throw off the timing for your ADC last hits. If I'm all of a sudden having to last hit a minion that I was planning on getting to later, it's distracting and I might miss out on CS and harassment opportunities.

-Throws off the amount of damage I need to deliver if I'm planning on CSing the minion under a tower. For instance if a melee minion is at full health he will live through 2 tower hits and I can get the last hit. If you do extra damage it might make it impossible for the tower not to get the last hit and I won't be grateful for your "help"

-Minions arrive in waves on a set timer and killing them quicker will not give your ADC more CS, and will usually just force him to farm near the opponents tower and will put you both in danger of ganks and keep your opponents much safer from harassment from both of you. So MOST of the time you don't want to do it. There are exceptions of course: If you can do a "reset" by clearing a wave of creeps quickly so your minions make it to their tower without being stopped by the next wave of enemy minions, this is almost always a good thing and is especially good if you and your ADC need to shop. It is even better if you do it when the enemy ADC is shopping. There are times when you can slow down the enemy minion wave long enough to keep them off your tower when your opponents are trying this tactic on you, so if that's the case glitterlance away and tell your ADC to suck it.

-You mentioned farming while your ADC is shopping. This is a good thing. But the fact that you and your ADC are not shopping together means something has gone wrong, which happens sometimes. It is annoying however when I go as either a Support or ADC to shop because its a great time for us to... and my lane partner stays. I usually come back from my shopping trip to a dead body of a champion who thought it would be a good idea to try and farm 1v2 or a champ who is so beaten up that now they need to shop... leaving me to try and farm 1v2... and the cycle continues until we lose our tower.

I just had a game where I am no longer hitting on creep at all during the laning phase and I am supporting my carry. I accidentally stayed too far away from him and he pointed out I was 2 almost 3 levels behind!!

Did someone say there is a setting that will show how close you need to be to get Experience?
