Statistical studies are great. However they do not look into reasoning behind a result.

For example there is a higher correlation between black objects and having been burned than white objects. Does that necessarily mean that black objects result in a higher probability of being burned? Or is it that due to the combustion process, the object becomes darker in color.

Exactly so in this case it could just be the type of women.
The things that drove them to be overweight (whether laziness or other) has driven them to be unsuccessful.

Well by BMI she would be considered obese. Then again BMI interprets many athletes as obese.
