Hi Everyone,

I am writing this to ask my fellow summoners for help. Sometimes when playing League of Legends (I estimate once every 20 games), my computer will simply lock up. I can't alt-tab, I can't alt-F4, I can't Ctrl-Alt-Del, I can't even press the numlock key and have the light toggle on my keyboard. Basically, whatever the problem is, it's blocking everything. My first thought is that I have some kind of hardware issue, but I have not had this freeze happening while doing anything other than playing League of Legends.

Does anyone else experience this? I haven't observed a pattern yet to what causes this. It's not any specific action that I do, or not that I can tell. One minute everything is fine, the next my computer is completely frozen and the only thing I can do to recover is a hard reset. Thank god for the Reconnect feature, but sometimes I can't reconnect before my team decides to surrender.

Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
i7 920
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580
6.00 GB RAM
EVGA X58 SLI motherboard

I have a number of theories, including:
- Maybe the northbridge overheating (but why then not in other games?) CPU and GPU are both liquid cooled, temps are fine.
- Hard drive issue. But why not in other games? I've completely uninstalled and then reinstalled LoL. I also tried repair feature one time. I still have the issue.
- I'm on Skype at the same time. Is there a known issue with Skype?
- Is there a known issue with Razer mice? I'm using a Razer Abyssus.

I had a similar issue with launching Mechwarrior Online a few weeks ago. Every single time I'd launch the game, it'd load up and then my computer would completely freeze, requiring a hard reset. However, once I dug into the nuts and bolts of the issue, I found that the game was freezing due to my GPU freezing and being unable to recover.

I would recommend updating your graphics card drivers once and trying, that fixed my issue.

Also, related question: Are you running a solid state hard drive as your OS or gaming HD?

Hi Morgageddon,

Thanks so much for your reply!

I have installed the OS on a solid state drive. League of Legends is on a platter-based (spinning) magnetic hard drive. Is there a known issue with SSD and LoL?

I have updated my graphic card drivers multiple times, and each time I've been hopeful. I still experience the issue now and then.

I looked in the Windows logs by the way and I don't see anything indicating a GPU freeze. Not saying that's not the cause, because in my limited experience hard freezes like this are almost always hardware, with the GPU as a prime suspect. Still, I don't understand why the problem doesn't appear in other games for me. Maybe it can happen, but simply hasn't happened in another game yet.

Vichar, yes there is for the SSD/platter with LoL.
I had a 90 gig SSD running a Sandforce control chip.
When I would be playing LoL, sometimes the SSD would FREEZE and windows itself would crash for anywhere from 30 seconds to two minutes at a time, IF it recovered. If it didn't, I had to reset the computer.

What model SSD are you using? Because to me, it sounds a lot like you need to update the firmware on it, as I did that and all LoL freezing disappeared.

This is great feedback. I just ordered and received my new SanDisk Extreme 240 GB SSD in the mail a few days ago, and I was going to install it because I had this suspicion that maybe my old Intel SSDSA2M080G2GC SSD (80GB) was freezing on me. Your comment has really made me more suspicious. I'll install the new SSD and see if I'm still getting the issue.

Thanks bunches!

Don't forget to update your firmware when you use the new SanDisk! Many SSDs are shipped with firmware 3-6 months out of date, causing stuttering and freezing.

Hello, as of the last patch. I am having the same exact issue as you stated above. I don't think it would be my GPU considering it was fairly new and I do not use a solid state drive. All of my drivers are up to date, etc. Was wondering if you found a solution to this problem? It just started occurring after this last patch and only freezes my pc from this game. I also play WoW, so I got on for a few hour w/ maxed video settings and it runs no problem.

My specs:
Processor AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor, 3200 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 6 Logical Processor(s)
System Type x64-based PC
Total Physical Memory 12.0 GB
Total Virtual Memory 24.0 GB
Graphics Chipset: AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series

I replaced my SSD (updated the firmware) and I have experienced the same issue several more times since. I now believe that the cause is running Skype and LoL at the same time. I do not recall running into the problem when Skype was not running.
