Let's start with Amumu; the sad mummy:
Amumu's lore casts him a sad little boy who wants to be around people. How does his kit make this happen? For starters w and e effect this by making you want to be near people, you fulfill amumu's need by constantly stick around as many people as possible, maybe even focusing your affections on just one person *coughADCcough*.
His ultimate on that note is the strongest extension of his desire to be with other people. The curse of the sad mummy is that you're forced to be with him regardless of your will. You will suffer his despair and tantrums.
What about his q then? I think his q is his best skill, because as players we especially feel what Amumu must feel. If we can land this q, people will be near us.We'll have some friends! We feel the disappointment when we miss the toss and I can only imagine that Amumu would feel the same.
I think the only lore trade off for gameplay is on his passive which really just serves to make him a harder to ignore target (though one can argue that that's an example of lore also)
