Actually Zed has one of the faster clear times in LoL. Probably up there with Master Yi in terms of clear time. But yes he is better in lane because he does need that gold and experience.
Hecarim has an incredibly weak early game, but once you bypass this he becomes this monster that just changes the game drastically. Zed on the other hand is solid throughout the entir game, like he only falls off slightly late game and that's due to him being an assassin.
Both fill entirely opposite and different roles, but both are also currently very solid picks. You can't go wrong with picking either one, it just takes a bit a practice. They're both champions that require a bit more thought and practice put into their maneuvers.
