Actually it's neither. It's sort of the same concept the limit of 1/x as x->0, it depends which side of 0 you're approaching it from. From the left, 0 is considered positive, from the right, negative. At least as far as I know.

No, but for practical purposes yes.

Math is essentially our way of abstracting the real world.

Let's say we are looking at a distance between two objects. What is the smallest distance apart they can be without touching each other? How would you represent it?

It only works because normal laws of mathematics ( i.e. no two non-equal numbers may equal eachother )
don't apply to values that aren't finite. Infinity isn't a number, it's a concept.
