I'll be looking more in depth at some of the things that League of Legends design does well (and other aspects that aren't quite up to snuff). I know I've been away for a while but now I'm back and ready to enlighten the masses. I'm also aware that Thresh has not yet been released but this is a champion that I find very very interesting and would love to talk about him a bit. I haven't been following the forums over the past couple of weeks so forgive me if I repeat what some of the talking heads have already brought up.
I've been a Dungeons and Dragons player for about a decade now. My adventuring party has gone through many changes over the years and several editions of the game but it's always felt a bit like home. When the 4th edition of DnD was released back in 2008, there was a new base class addition called the Warlord that really struck my eye.
This class was meant to be a combat leader of sorts, able to hold his own in a physical fight but distinguishable from Fighters and Paladins by the use of tactical shifting. A good Warlord is not defined by how much damage he can take or dish-out but rather by letting his or her allies fight at their full potential. Warlords are distinctly a support class but with relatively mediocre healing and protecting abilities. Basically, Warlords are out in the field surveying the battle and making quick tactical decisions to influence the fight. These range from moving allies, moving enemies, allowing allies extra attacks and whatnot.
Fast-forward to the beginning of 2013 and I hear about this new champion called Thresh. Upon close inspection, I believe I have found the Warlord class within the realm of League. This is fantastic news as it really is a playstyle that was previously unavailable in the game. Giving people the ability to control the positioning of both enemies and allies is a fascinating new mechanic that is going to give support players a new high skill-cap champion to master.
That being said, this is a lop-sided prospect. The vast majority of League players play solo for most of their games and Thresh is simply not a champion that can be effective solo. From what I understand of the character, he brings massive utility to a team but the utility is INCREDIBLY reliant on teammates. Yeah, Thresh will still be somewhat useful without vocal communication between players but he's hamstrung by the inability to coordinate.
My prediction is that Thresh will make an entrance on the competitive scene and do fairly well there. Non-competitive players will make an attempt to copy them and fail miserably due to the team-reliant nature of the champion. He will then gain a reputation as a champion that's incredibly effective on organized teams but next to worthless otherwise. This is somewhat similar to the hero, Chen, in dota.
