Zyra is best for controlling fights from outside. For that you need to have some good fighters in front like jax,xin, and when enemy team focus them you have easy job planting and destroying. She is not good if you have in/out champs like lee, kha, etc
Most ap champs are not good against in/out champs which are designed to counter or burst them down.

Actually, I find if you build her a bit tanky she punishes people REALLY hard for trying to dive onto her.

If you are building glass-cannon then yeah, you aren't going to be able to do anything without good peel.
