They don't ! However, the last name just sounds a whole lot more masculine than feminine (and Lablanche which would be the feminine equivalent is not really used much if at all).

Jericho Swain, in this case, Swain sound much better.

But I agreed with OP, I prefer Emilia over LeBlanc, simply because it easier to type and in-game, that could make a different.

I imagine he means gender as in the case of the noun, like in Latin. Granted, I don't know anything about French so I could be completely wrong.
