In the latest patch, the ability to /ignore someone to stop them from ping spamming was removed. Instead, the user's ability to ping is throttled if they ping more than X number of pings in time interval Y. While this solved the issue of someone getting angry and constantly pinging for minutes on end, it still leaves the door open for other ping spamming issues.
The Problem
A ping is incredibly distracting to me, as I have to divert my attention from gameplay to the minimap, to see if we've changed our target, if we're in danger of being ganked, that sort of thing. If I'm in the middle of an engagement with the enemy, the choice to ignore the ping for a few seconds, or not, is one of those snap decisions you learn to make as you become better at the game.
Hearing 3-5 pings in rapid succession has the effect of making me almost totally ignore my gameplay and concentrate on the minimap. What could be so important that the person pinged that many times? Oh, they were pinging an undefended tower in top lane, the obviously almost dead target in an engagement or some other completely obvious thing that didn't need a ping at all, much less 5 of them. In the meantime, that second or two I used to figure out what was so important has gotten me killed. If I'm grouped with a ping spammer like this, I find myself ignoring rapid-fire pings, which is the exact opposite of the intent of a ping.
Solution
It should not be possible for one person to ping 3-5 times in rapid succession. I don't care if they do it and are then throttled from pinging for a minute. I want pings to *mean* something. Let people ping *once* per time interval, something in the 5-10 seconds range.
