edit:

x=0.999999


10x=9.9999999
9x=9.000000000000
x=1
0.999999999=1




another way to look at it

1/3 = 0.33333333
1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 0.33333 + 0.333333 + 0.3333333
3/3 = 0.9999999999
1 = 0.999999999999

doesnt equal to 1. however, .333 that goes on forever times 3 equals to 1. this is because 1/3 times 3 = 1

It can be proven it does, but it depends on how you look at it.
x=0.999....
10x=9.999...
10x - x= 9.999... - x
9x=9
x=1
x=x
0.999...=1

Depends on the your definition of equal, but for the most part you're right, they're not.

@above, that is proof by using the conclusion, which is not a valid proof.

anybody who uses this bogus 1/3 = .33333333333 is also jumping to the conclusion and isn't proving anything.
