I'm not sure if this has already been stated in the replies, but MR CAN have a negative value and you WILL take more dmg the more negative it becomes. (tried and tested)

Q-
I was morgana lane with sion. they had yi behind their tower, the tower hit out creeps (had 6 in range) so we pushed in to hit tower. Tower kills 1st creep and proceeds to hit sion instead. No damage was dealt to an enemy hero..
