Confusing question. He's kinda both but you need a combination of AS/AD otherwise he attacks too slow if you only build AD.

I've carried with ap shaco before.

He's scary as hell if done right, the enemy team should fear their own jungle. Also a liches bane and he ganks the low hp or focus the squishy in teamfights almost as hard as ad shaco.

I have a hard time seeing shaco as a ad carry because he's so squishy. You HAVE to buy survivability if you want to last more than 5 secs in an actual fight late.

I play as a AD Shaco only because I can't do a jungling Shaco well (but I have seen it done) and an AP Shaco gets taken down quite easily but that might be because of how I've played with him.

He is definitely squishy though so ganking is good with him.

If played correctly, an insane AD carry, but you can't engage directly. At the engage you shouldn't even top 2000 health.
