What is Riot's definition of a "Legendary" skin? What determines Legendary-ness?

Are legendary skins even a good business model? Do people rush out to buy skins simply because they are legendary, and have some sort of exclusivity?

I mean, you pour X resources into a project, you want to make your investment of resources back in our precious cash. At least based on anecdotal evidence, people are more inclined to buy things that are cheaper, and legendary skins are really expensive (as far as game content goes). Do you guys have some crazy complex pricing mechanism behind the curtain that makes Battlecast Urgot cheaper than Gatekeeper Galio? Like say Urgot's not exactly popular so you make the skin cheaper to move more units.

Legendary skins are skins they aren't super lazy on.

Most other unique looking skins have particles that don't match, moves that look wrong and in general are a lazy mess.

Bloodstone Taric is a great example.Still shines rainbows and only proper matching skill AT ALL is his ult.

Does not compute.

At least, drop the price.

Piltover Heimerdinger is 10x cooler than Alien Heimerdinger for half the price.
I doubt those remakes will go that far. Dryad Soraka will just get a tweaked texture so it fits the new default mesh, and Divine Soraka will get a tweaked mesh and tweaked texture to fit the new default skeleton & animations. It's hardly the kind of overhaul you expect legendary skins to get.

Anyways, it's pretty clear they will not refund everyone the money or go back and redo every single skin every time they come up with something new, and yes, it makes sense as much as people might hate that.

The best thing at this point would probably be to retire skins every so often (when Riot is ready to release a batch of higher quality skins), that way people get new shiny stuff and those who bought the old skins get to say they have a rare, no longer available skin. Not the ideal solution but I doubt it can get any better than that given the circumstances.

If you look at the skin and go "Holy ****, that ***** is gonna kill me hard!" = Legendary skin

Well, could you at least make a one-shot deal for MTF? He's far and away the worst case.

You could also lower prices on older skins to reasonable levels as skin quality increases.

thanks for the skin problem Morello

you were a bit vague, and understandably so, this community has a way of holding ANYTHING you say against you at a later time.

good points, can't retroactively fix EVERY lackluster skin. It's a self-perpetuating cycle that slows down the output of new content, and will eventually take up the entire staff's attention. (Since it's a circular problem that can only grow over time.)

Thanks for the thoughts. Keep the nerfbat strong.

This is why I will NEVER EVER buy a legendary skin - in a few months it will look worse then the 975 skins and nothing will ever be done about it.

Simply not worth it.

I guess that pretty much shutsdown any hope that Mafia Miss Fortune will get any completion then.

Why is it that model reworks is good but a skin rework isn't? I would think reworking a champion's model would take more resource(since you're also remaking their skins as well). And like skins, people are still buying a champion regardless of how comically large their feet are.

edit: Waaaiiit a sec. What about Amethyst Ashe? That's not even a Legendary like Magnificent TF is. Yet you would rather make improvements on a non-legendary cheaper skin like Amethyst Ashe? You even personally said you'd look into making her arrows purple.

And Mafia Miss Fortune, particles for machine gun bullets already exist, on your Gangster Twitch skin. Wouldn't that be easier than making entirely new purple arrows for Ashe?

I do fully understand Riot's stance on this issue, as the quality of legendary skins continues to rise they can't be going back to improve older legendary skins. Pulsefire Ezreal looks to be a prime example in stepping up quality, just as they did over a year ago when all new Legendary skins started having new effects/particles.

But you have to look at skins like Red Baron Corki, MTF, and Alien Invasion Heimer and ask yourself why anyone would want to pay such a price for those skins...? These are the special cases, IMO.

I think Riot should come up with something for these 3 skins. Nobody is ever going to look at Demonblade Tryndamere and say: "he's inferior to newer legendary skins" because he at least has all the qualifying aspects of a legendary skin (new look, particles, effects, etc.)

Just give these skins SOMETHING. Or lower the price. I put a lot of faith in Riot's ability to act on issues like this that could potentially end up being both profitable and good for publicity.
