Why do people put words in quotes as if for emphasis? *Asterisks*, boldface, italics, underline, or some mega-godly *combination* are all available, but you choose to use quotes? Are you raging only hypothetically hard or slang hard?

Because you often use scare-quotes, or a fake quote voice to draw attention to something, by being obviously mockingly "subtle".
