Trinity Blood is a must watch anime for any enthusiast,
D Gray Man is also very good and has dark themes
Black Blood brothers while only having 12 episodes, is very good as well.

Dark with Action (Like FMA)
Deadman Wonderland
D gray man
Black Lagoon (Realistic and very good action and themes)
Ghost in the shell
Akira
Gantz (Gore and *** is the name of the game for this anime, stupid ending since it was cnacelled before its time)
Basilisk (Semi-Realistic and really good)

Dark no Action
Death Note
Baccano (Semi realistic)

Lighter with more Action
Hunter x Hunter
Code Geass
Eureka Seven

I would say to stay away from naruto, bleach one piece and fairy tail unless you love anime in general they are not dark and are mostly straight up shounens (action animes for teens). Gurren lagan is also a straight up shounen, in fact it is the shouniest fo shounens, you will not like it if you do not enjoy the shounen tropes.

I added the lighter with more action section because this do not have such dark themes as the others but do no fall under the straight up shounen category and are a little more adult.

Everyone hating on Naruto its a very good anime you people just want to try and not be "mainstream" but you keep acting like each other ....sheep keep following ..

Original Naruto is straight ****, don't even try to defend it, it is straight ****. Shippuden however, is a different story.
