Technically, what you are purchasing is arbitrary, worth nothing, and is still owned by Riot. So no, it does not have real life monetary value really. You are just giving them money for something that is basically imaginary when you buy RP. It is also in their power to give out that arbitrary currency as they so often do on the forums to people who draw stupid pictures.

Anyway, I'm bored, so I'll go ahead and explain the premise of voting with my wallet to you- while I, individually, don't have the power to make Riot do anything at the current time (unless they somehow broken their own EULA in some obvious fashion which I would be aware of), if enough disgruntled users decide to stop buying RP but continue to play the game (taking up server space which costs money) Riot would more or less be forced to bend to their consumer's collective will, or introduce some subscription model and hope more people don't drop. So no, I can't change Riot, or LoL, but WE can. Oh and if you can point out where I said Riot owes me anything, I'll be shocked.
