How come? Or how come it doesn't make it a requirement to POST in the thread clearly stating your argument/reason for up/downvoting in order to down/upvote someone?

If I were to venture a guess, the vote system, while helpful for drowning out people spamming shock sites and other OBVIOUS trolls, is generally quite toxic as a whole, and doesn't add all that much.

For example, back when Diana was first released and clearly over-the-top OP. There were more than a couple of posts going into rather accurate detail exactly why Diana was OP. Most of them got like 8 downvotes without a single reply. Quite a few threads accurately explains why a champion, like RELEASE Zyra was OP, but was downvoted to oblivion by people who bought her on release.

The intent of the votes were obvious, and they're clearly detrimental.

And then there are the all too common cases where people are asking completely neutral and innocent questions...and they get downvoted to oblivion. A person asking stuff like "what is Olaf's weakness supposed to be, I can't find it?" will receive all the downvotes from Rengar players even if he didn't ask for any nerfs.

What would happen if the up/downvote were revealed. Like "You were upvoted by __,__, and___" and "You were downvoted by ____,____, and ___". Or heck, make posting and explaining your choice of vote a requirement before voting.

i agree that the voting thing is stupid. people will just look for comments with lots of upvotes and downvotes and just conform to what others seem to think rather than deciding for themself

I liked the concept of upvotes, but recently there has been even a larger problem:

Notice anything?

What difference would it make if it wasn't anonymous?

If you have to make a post before you vote, then there may as well be no voting system at all. I could see somebody's reason being "i like it", which is just a waste of space. Not everyone has an essay worthy reason why they liked or disliked something.

...does it have something to do with role selection?

Votes should never be anonymous in the first place, there's no reason for it to be so.

Also, if you're not even willing to justify or defend your choice of vote, you shouldn't even vote in the first place, you have no reason to vote if you can't even devote your time to justify it, would also make the system FAR less toxic.

I think you already hit the nail on the head as to why it's not tied to a post. If there's a troll thread that needs to be shut down, then forcing people to post before voting only bumps it back to the top of the list. While the system can be abused, it does tend to balance out in the long run; the really good posts get high votes, and the ones that people really shouldn't bother with get voted into oblivion (except Red posts of course, but Reds rarely make those kinds of posts). It's not a perfect system, but there are better ways of improving it. For example, if it's not already in place, a moderater could be required to actively close (or at least check and be able to re-open) a thread that is getting downvoted.
