Since apparently Riot enjoys adding active on click items I'd like to know something. Typically I don't buy activate on click items because it seems to get me killed. Having to switch my mouse to the item, find it, click it, and move my mouse back onto the screen isn't very effective.

So is there a way to hotkey an item to activate it?

Number keys 1-6 activate items on your corresponding item slot. Those can, in addition, be re-confugured in the keybindings menu to be placed on other keys if the placement is not to your liking.

I press T, for example, for item slot 2, which is where I put my actives. So it's like a fifth skill!

I hotkey my primary item active that I use constantly to Space. Lets me not worry about moving my fingers, and still hit my active at a moments notice.
