DOT/Damage over time usually refers to a specific ability—like Ignite, Darius' passive, Mordekaiser's ult—while DPS is just a general term used to describe damage being dealt constantly rather than in one big burst. I don't hear people use DPS very much, actually.

Damage over time (DoT) is the type of damage certain abilities deal. They will deal their damage over a longer period of time as apposed to "bursting" with single damage.

Damage per second (DPS) is the amount of damage a champion is able to deal per second through their entire kit. Generally DPS is not viewed by the "second", but over a period of about 5 seconds. For instance there are champions that can deal VERY large amounts of damage in an instant because they are "nukers" however over the course of a team fight their damage will be considerably less then a "DPS" champion.

dps is usually to gauge sustained dmg.

when you have nukers, you dont quite have sustained dmg when you consider cooldowns, but if you did factor in nuke time and cooldown time along with their regular attacks(fillers) say over a 1 minute period, it averages out the dps instead of considering the first 5 seconds of nuke time where it could be very high.

dots is like a type of dmg like a nuke, one is bursty and fast, the other is over time. both can be measured by dps per se.

DoT is just damage that can happen over time, like poison

DPS is the AVERAGE damage per second anyone can deal out

doubt there is even a need to go into dps on this game, unlike world of warcraft where everything is measured by dps. from dots, to instant spells, to melee attacks over whatever course of time you want to measure it by.
