Learn to play, poke(sona), kill(leona/blitz), or sustain(soraka).
Warding is essential, be willing to die for your ADC, if he is 3-0 you are worth much less than him.
you have to feel like a mother, always protecting the ADC.
I would recommend sona, even with health nerfs :c, she is a nice addition to almost any team.
be prepared to take ****.

Learn to ad carry well. When you learn to adc, you'll automatically know what to do as a support. You never truly understand the needs of your adc unless you've played it yourself. I.e. how scary an unwarded bush can be, even in lane with a sona sitting in it.

This as well, I know when I got sick of supporting for a little bit I played ADC, went back to support, and BAM I could see my support getting better.

If you're serious about playing support, also try used but non-traditional supports from time to time. It'll help you understand how to lane against them when you encounter them, which seems to be more and more often now. Lux, Morgana and Fiddlesticks seem to be semi-common as "mage supports", with Lux being the most, and Fiddle the least.

Practice makes perfect, so keep practicing!

Think about champs that synchronize well with ADCs. Varus, Kog'maw, and MF work well with attack speed increases because of their passive additional bonuses; Nunu is great for this. Vayne needs lots of farm to win the game; think about bringing along Janna or Soraka to play a more passive farming game and to save her skin when she needs it. Draven, Ezreal, and Graves are really offensive; consider Leona, Blitz, Sona, or Lulu for more powerful harass or kill lane potential. These are all things to consider when deciding your support.
