To be fair, I thought I knew how to play the champion somewhat before picking them (and picking them was a matter of someone else going "hey pick this guy it'll be great in this comp/matchup").

Some champions are just broken and don't really require being smart. Amumu can fail all his ganks but suddenly stun the whole team and it's gg.

You have to start somewhere when you want to learn how to play a champ. Unless, you are referring to ranked.

In ranked? Not unless I get "forced" into it (by picks/bans of the enemies and "free" roles in my team). Usually, even if people go like "Dude, you have to play X, he's broken!" I'll much rather explain I don't know how to play the champion properly, and I'd prefer playing something I'm comfortable with.

In normals? As the guy two posts above me said... you have to start somewhere. And basically everything works against bots... :P
