It's not just the instant 300 health shield, it's also the MR to reduce your total damage, and the AD to kill you.

I'd much rather they have something like this than get a negatron cape or two. Grabbing two of those will hurt me a thousand times more than any hexdrinker. Not to mention hexdrinker is a pretty mediocre late game item.
