I've been floating between 1450-1520 rating now for about 30 games now. I play mostly tanks because nobody else ever seems to want to. I play a very good Rammus/Shen/Galio but seem to have hit a wall. It isn't because 'Thats where I belong' as I have duo queued with 1800+ rated players and fit in fine. I was in the top 500 list during beta on one occasion. My issue is that playing tank you can only 'do so much'. You rely on your DPS to kill what you CC etc. I have dropped down to a 4.2 K/D/A ratio on Shen now because the DPS I've been playing with haven't doing so well. I frequently pull top kills/assists with least deaths even when recklessly sacrificing myself for a single DPS I 'might' save. I just can't seem to climb out of upper 1400s/low 1500s.

What do you guys think? Is it possible to climb up to high Elo with solo queues as a tank or am I confined to start playing carries?

You might just be at a high enough elo where people actually follow the tank and capitalize on the opportunities tanks create. Sadly though, you may lose a lot of games because you aren't the key playmaker and get paired with poor carries.

You should keep tanking though, because in general a team with a good tank stands a much better chance of winning than one without. Solo Queue needs more selfless players like you. Tank on my friend.

Duo queue with a friend that plays a number of damage dealers well until about 1600-1700's. At that range, you can actually confidently rely on people playing a carry to do their job.

You're confined to carries until you reach the breakpoint. Unfortunately it's true.

The only solution if you want to tank is to play Malphite because he can double as pseudo-carry or probably jungle Rammus.
